On August 17, the Copyright Office rolled out a new program that allows influencers and bloggers a cost-effective and efficient method of registering their content.  The category is called “Group Registration for Short Online Literary Works” and includes poems, short stories, articles, blog posts and other social media posts.  This category allows for up to 50 works on a single application as long as all of the works meet the following requirements:

  • Each work must have a minimum of 50 words and a maximum of 17,500 words
  • Each work must be created by the same individual or joint authors
  • Each creator must be named as the copyright claimant for each work
  • Each work must be published online within a three-calendar-month period

This is a major development for those who post short works online that have the potential to be infringed.  It also puts writers who produce a vast quantity of short works on the same playing field with photographers, who have long enjoyed group registration and its savings.
